Captain Hill left me and Chelo alone in the war room. Chelo came up beside me and I pulled her close, trying to fill some of the empty place where Marcus should be. We stared at images of the Peacemaker and the Sun’s Orbit. I turned them round and round in 3D. This moment felt like the first time Jenna had led us up the ramp into the New Making. It would change us forever. Finding Marcus had done that, losing Marcus had done that, and now the gifts he left me had done that, too.

“It’s hard to know what to think,” I mused.

She whispered, “I’m very, very scared.”

Chelo often claimed war followed us. Now we raced toward battle. Toward Islans I might kill. With two ships. No, three. Some of another fourteen. People I was responsible for. Captains I should meet.

Her weight felt like safety. “The Peacemaker looks like the ship I’ve flown in my dreams.”

Chelo laughed softly. “I don’t know of any mod that helps you tell the future.”

“I don’t either. But these ships feel like destiny. I’m as scared as you are. But we can’t show that.”

“I know.” She glanced around the room slowly, as if trying to memorize every ship on every wall. “I need to come back here. But we need to go check on Kayleen.”

“Your work with the Doctrine matters more than my memories of ships I’ll fight in.” I turned the walls all off with my mind. A little show of power I didn’t need to use, the kind of thing that was merely a brag. Marcus would hate it. But after all the horror of the last few days, it felt good to display a tiny bit of control.
